Oddly enough, I had not heard of this author before and came to this story with no expectations, just an interest in the topics described in the promo. I sat down to read about 8 p.m. and the first time I raised my head from the pages it was 2 a.m. There is no higher compliment I can give an author than becoming so immersed in his or her story that I lose a huge chunk of time. The storycraft here is great. Slaughter feeds us pieces of information slowly, but constantly, reeling the reader in like a prize catch. The characters are all rich and multidimensional. You are sure you would recognize them if you encountered them in the street. The Southern small town in all its simplicity and complexity is skillfully recreated. The ending is a surprise, yet perfectly completes the series of circles that have defined the book. Read it. You will be glad you did.
