I've been enjoying Bob Dylan--buying his music, following his career--since 1964. I've watched many good and bad DVD documentaries about him. I especially prize Martin Scorsese's Dylan film, which strongly captures the early music and controversy of the young Dylan, but which doesn't present, in biographical detail, a long view of Dylan's musical and personal unfolding. For that, I strongly recommend this A&E biography, filled with archival images & scenes and & interviews that mostly I had not seen before. My only disappointment is that the film was completed just after the release of Dylan's 1997 album, TIME OUT OF MIND, the first of a quintet of spectacular albums. (The others are LOVE AND THEFT, MODERN TIMES, TOGETHER THROUGH LIFE, and TEMPEST.)

I hope A&E at some point catches up with, and fills in, a musical career that will not cease delivering the creative goods until Dylan breathes his last.
