In this sumptuous offering, one of our premier storytellers provides a feast for fiction aficionados. Spanning four decades and three prize-winning collections, these 21 vintage selected stories and 13 scintillating new ones take us around the world, from Jerusalem to Central America, from tsarist Russia to London during the Blitz, from central Europe to Manhattan, and from the Maine coast to Godolphin, Massachusetts, a fictional suburb of Boston. These charged locales, and the lives of the endlessly varied characters within them, are evoked with a tenderness and incisiveness found in only our most observant seers.

Edith Pearlman is, quite simply, shockingly talented. What's more shocking is that hardly anyone has heard of her. And since she's in her late 70s (the last I heard), I didn't expect to see anything else from her. But I just got a head's-up from Amazon saying she has a book of new stories being released tomorrow (Jan 6, 2015). I sincerely hope she lives long enough to see the broader success she so richly deserves. I agree with the others commenting here: her stories are among the best I've ever read. I would give her ten stars if I could!

Yes, it's one of the best books of short stories I have read. She's right up there with Alice Munro.

Wonderful book of short stories. Many different characters and subjects--all entertaining and many thought-provoking as well. Highly recommend.
